Conch Key started out as a limestone island with shallow underwater areas and with some areas above sea level. Henry Flagler's 1910 Overseas Railroad crew used Conch Key, the heart of the Florida Keys, for plying the spoils (mud and sand) from the sea bottom during the building of the cofferdams for the Long Key Viaduct. The Long Key Viaduct is 2.8 miles in length. The spoil was pumped out and bulldozers where used to spread out the material.
Today, Conch Key has wonderful soil and we have many coconut palms, tropical fruit trees, hibiscus bushes, Christmas tree palms, roebelenii palms, bougainvillea plants. Our island is very colorful. The circumference of Conch Key is about 1/3 of a mile. So, if you like to walk in the mornings, you'll have to go around three times to get your one mile workout!
